The writer is saying that friendship with characterless people is not advisable.You will be the loser in the bargain.In this context,he is putting forth the example of bed lies.When a lie bites us when we are lying on the cot, we keep the cot in the sun and thrash it hard so that lies might leave the cot.Similarly, If we make friendship with a loafer, we get bad name in the end. In Telugu there is a saying,Thati chettu kinda koorchuni paalu thaaginaa,lokam kallu thaagaavani anukuntundi. Paalu thaagaavante asalu nammadu.
So it is better if we ward off friendship with the wrong persons from the beginning.
